Architect to watch: Ignacio Merino, creator of Casa Flotante

By Leon van Huyssteen on - 3m. reading time

Marbella is no stranger to style, from its multicultured people to the stylish villas they call home. Over here, designer living is practically a pastime!

But design doesn't have to exist for its own sake. What if it draws nature into the picture, so to speak? Embracing sustainability and a more responsible sense of living?

READ ON about a bold young architect who is creating just that: Ignacio Merino.

Who is Ignacio Merino?

As part of a new breed of architects who break the rules of design and reveal a new sense of logic to it, Ignacio Merino is devoted to creation. More specifically, creating a more personal design trend. And a big part of that personality comes from nature.

As CEO of Malaga-based Flow81 Architecture Lab, Merino is a firm believer in visiting a plot before creating a house to fill it. Simply put, the land speaks to him. Inspiring him to shape the design around it, and not the other way around.

His designs are elegant and easy to behold, while always in line with the environment that holds it. Similarly, Flow81's homes are more sustainable, in spirit with their surroundings by being built with natural materials such as stone and wood.

But don't just take our word for it: just recently Forbes Magazine included Merino in its list of 10 esteemed creators to watch! Also, in 2022, they received the Special Mention of the Andalusia Architecture Awards and the Malaga Architects' Prize.

And their sights are firmly set on the Pritzker!

What sets Flow81 apart?

Besides taking inspiration from nature, the design studio never loses sight of the people who will fill their houses.

That means finding special ways to create. This includes:

  • Defining a sensorial palette for every home they design.
  • Taking the natural terrain as much as the future owners into account.
  • Using its own in-house engineering department, to create lighter, practical, cost-effective building processes.

Which exclusive Drumelia listing has Ignacio Merino designed?

This house shouldn't just be seen, but experienced.

Built over several levels, it combines airy spaces with stunning views, right in the heart of Marbella Club Golf Resort.

A natural bamboo bridge that floats over water leads one to the grand entrance. Then there's a magnificent 20-foot-tall ficus bonsai that stands serenely in a reflective pool. Behind it a waterfall, and filtered sunlight from the glass ceiling above.

All said, a space that speaks of nature!
